The US Department of War is updating its C-UAS marketplace to speed up access to anti-drone technology by inking a $15 million contract with AI software company Kaizen. Announced by the DoW's Joint Interagency Task Force 401 in February, the marketplace is intended to help the US military, law enforcement and allies identify and evaluate anti-drone equipment more quickly. Kaizen's software acts an an application layer above existing government systems, combining a searchable catalogue of validated C-UAS technologies with AI tools designed to turn operational needs into recommended combinations of counter-drone technologies and streamline the procurement process. The marketplace reflects a wider shift in procurement that moves away from highly specialised systems to more commercial technology, where software and rapid updates take precedence. Drone technology has reshaped modern warfare, particularly on both sides of the Ukraine war, where inexpensive commercial drones have become widely available, frequently used and increasingly expendable. Meanwhile, fragmented and inefficient procurement processes have struggled to keep up. In the C-UAS space, the challenge is particularly acute with many companies offering different solutions across radar, sensors, electronic warfare systems, kinetic interceptors and command-and-control software. While digital marketplaces can accelerate technology discovery and reduce administrative friction, procurement delays are often rooted in wider issues, including testing, budgeting, contracting and integration. A 2025 report by the US Government Accountability Office warned that the Pentagon's traditional acquisition model remains too slow for emerging threats, noting that major defence programmes take nearly 12 years on average to deliver an initial capability.
